You can visit the Bardenas Reales all year round, but each season has its own charm… and its own tricks. From Fustiñana, ‘the gateway to the Bardena Negra’, we tell you what to expect at each time of year so you can choose the right dates for your break.
Spring: the desert at its greenest
For many, it's the best time of all: pleasant temperatures and the contrast between the green fields and the ochre tones of the desert. Please note: during the bird breeding season, access to some protected areas of the Bardena Blanca (such as El Rallón or Pisquerra) is closed. Always check the official notices before you go.
Summer: an early start is key
The heat is intense and there's no shade, drinking water or facilities in the park. If you're coming in summer:
- Go in first thing (visits are allowed from 8:00) or late in the afternoon.
- Bring plenty of water, a cap and sun cream.
- Save the middle of the day for resting at the house in the air conditioning, or for outings such as Sendaviva.
Autumn: golden light and fewer crowds
Mild temperatures, spectacular sunsets and fewer visitors. It's a wonderful time for photography and for driving the perimeter track at a leisurely pace. Check the closing time: the park is open until an hour before dusk, and in autumn it gets dark early.
Winter: watch out for the mud
Cold, clear days bring beautiful light, but after rain the clay ground turns into very sticky mud and some tracks may close. Check track conditions at the Los Aguilares Information Centre before heading in.
Always, whatever the season
- Stick to the signposted tracks and drive at no more than 40 km/h.
- Camping, flying drones and climbing are not allowed.
- There's a military zone in the Bardena Blanca: on some days, during exercises, part of the perimeter track is closed.
